Leadership and Management Skills Course for Early Career Researchers

November 8th – 25th, 2022

This online workshop will be facilitated in six half-day sessions spread over 3 weeks (November 8th, 11th, 15th, 18th, 22nd & 25th)

We will work from 14:30 to 18:00 (CET/Berlin)

Early Career Researchers find themselves in a highly diverse and competitive research landscape. To successfully navigate their career paths, transferable skills in the areas of communication, (self)-organisation, and interpersonal relationships are essential. We believe that these skills can be acquired and developed. This workshop will enable Early Career Researchers to productively deal with challenges related to the interpersonal aspects of working in science.

Goals

  • Advance your communication, collaboration, and (self-)organisational skills

  • Understand how to reach career goals more efficiently and effectively

  • Learn and practice useful tools for your career in science and beyond

  • Strengthen your network and collaborations

  • Be encouraged to establish and maintain a peer support group

Topic Menu

At the beginning of the workshop, we will collect expectations and current challenges from participants and tailor the workshop based on the following topics

  • Key communication skills
  • Dealing with conflicts constructively
  • Effective time management: setting useful goals; setting priorities 
  • Dealing with different personalities
  • Establishing and maintaining collaborations
  • The art of delegation
  • Understanding group dynamics
  • Mastering the job interview process
  • Better together: peer coaching

Our Working Style

  • As our training philosophy is based on ‘learning by doing’, we strive for a highly interactive learning environment in which participants actively engage in discussions and exercises
  • The group size is limited to 16 participants
  • We will balance teaching and practical exercises in pairs or small groups
  • We will work with real life cases of participants
  • The workshop will be fine tuned to the needs of the participants
  • We will use the resources of the video conferencing platform Zoom
  • Materials produced during the workshop will be made available to participants

Technical Requirements and Logistics

  • Stable internet connection
  • Latest version of the Zoom video conferencing software on PC or Mac
  • Attending all sessions is mandatory in order to fully benefit from this workshop

If you are based outside Germany and your institution is handling payment, VAT can be exempt (VAT ID required).

Registration is closed.

The vast majority of our trainers are scientists who have been working with scientists for many years. To ensure diversity, each workshop will be facilitated by two trainers.
